Graham York Rare Books
Graham York Rare Books is a sensorial exploration of memory and place, inspired by the intimate experience of a second-hand bookstore. This CMYK silkscreen print on textured cotton paper captures the rich visual tapestry of colourful book spines arranged on four shelves—each meticulously labelled with local categories such as “Exeter”—and transforms them into an enduring celebration of literature and memory.
At first glance, the work confronts the viewer with an array of vivid hues derived from the spines of aged books. These colours, vibrant yet nostalgic, evoke the haphazard yet treasured collection of narratives preserved over time. Overlapping each row, in a ghostly translucent white, are the capitalised words TOUCH SMELL TASTE LOVE. Like whispered recollections that slowly trail off, these words drift towards the edges of the paper, suggesting the fleeting, almost intangible nature of sensory experiences.
My inspiration for this piece came from brief but poignant visits to a cherished second-hand bookstore—a sanctuary where the combined aroma of musty pages and well-loved texts became so vivid I felt I could nearly taste it. I imagined a solitary customer leisurely browsing through the shelves, luxuriating in the tactile pleasure of well-worn pages and the quiet beauty of an environment steeped in literary history. In that space, every sense was engaged: the touch of paper, the smell of old print, and the taste of nostalgia, all infused with an abiding love for literature.
In creating Touch, Smell, Taste, Love, I sought not merely to reproduce a visual record of a specific place, but to investigate how sensory memories can evoke the romance of reading and the deep, personal connections we forge with spaces of quiet discovery. The silkscreen medium allowed me to layer colours and textures in a way that echoes the complexity of those moments—where every detail, no matter how impermanent, can continue to resonate in the mind.
Ultimately, this work stands as a love letter to second-hand bookstores, and more widely, to the sensory pleasures that inform our experience of the world. At a time when digital media increasingly distances us from the tactile and the tangible, Graham York Rare Books invites the viewer to pause and reconnect with the memories, the textures, and the lasting impressions of physical space. It is a celebration of how even brief encounters can leave an indelible mark on our hearts and minds—a testament to the beauty of experiences that go far beyond the visual, becoming a multisensory narrative of belonging.
