Hidden High Street
The "Hidden High Street" series is my exploration of the often unnoticed spaces and everyday encounters that form the essence of our shared communities. By turning to the local shops, independent businesses, and communal rituals of the high street, I hope to shed light on the beauty and richness of these spaces—both in their individuality and in the ways they bring people together. Each piece in the series is an invitation to pause and reflect on the stories, connections, and quiet moments of significance that these places offer.
In creating this series, I sought to emphasise the uniqueness of these locations and the role they play in shaping our lives. They are more than just functional spaces; they are environments where relationships are forged, memories are made, and identities are expressed. Whether it is the charm of a toy shop, the aroma of a second-hand bookshop, or the quiet labour of a flower seller, my hope is that each work captures the humanity and vibrancy that define the high street. It is my way of honouring these spaces and celebrating the creativity, care, and character they embody.
At the same time, the series acknowledges the fragility of these institutions. In a rapidly changing world, where global chains often overshadow local businesses, I hope this body of work can serve as a gentle reminder of what is at stake. These are places of deep personal and communal value—places that contribute to the diversity and warmth of our daily lives. By reflecting on their significance, I hope to encourage others to recognise and cherish the distinctive treasures of their own high streets.
The works in "Hidden High Street" vary in tone and approach, ranging from playful reinterpretations to more introspective and critical perspectives. This variety mirrors the multifaceted nature of high street life itself, blending humour, nostalgia, and reflection to create a series that feels both personal and universal. Each piece engages with themes of transformation—how the familiar can be seen anew, and how ordinary objects and places can take on profound meanings. It is through this lens that I hope to inspire viewers to look closer, to linger, and to discover the extraordinary in what might otherwise be overlooked.
The tactile and material qualities of the works are central to this series. By drawing on traditional printmaking techniques and experimenting with textures and forms, I aimed to create pieces that resonate both visually and physically. Whether it is the glittering silver border of a cherished cookshop or the fading text of a sports shop print, I hope these elements evoke the sensory experiences that define our relationships with the places around us.
Ultimately, "Hidden High Street" is an offering. It is not just a collection of artworks, but an invitation to notice—to reconnect with the spaces and stories that shape us, and to recognise the quiet yet profound value of the everyday. My hope is that through these works, viewers are reminded of the importance of care and individuality in a world that often prizes convenience over character. It is a celebration of the high street as a place of meaning, creativity, and human connection, and a call to honour and preserve its spirit for the future.
